The author of “Dear Church”., Lenny Duncan, writes a love letter to the ELCA. In the introduction to his book Duncan says, “Whenever I think of my first experience in the ELCA, I get goosebumps. Rev. Johansen stood at the Communion table and declared, “This is Jesus’s table; he made no restrictions, and neither do we.” Duncan, a black, queer man, felt welcomed.
But, Duncan then goes on to question how we got to “being the whitest denomination in America?”
