Nurturing Spirituality

prayer_place

"The spiritual life does not remove us from the world but leads us deeper into it" - Henri Nouwen

At Redeemer, we think of spirituality as seeing "God in all things and all things in God."  We aspire to live lives that are attentive and responsive to God's love and grace.  We try to discern through prayer, worship and meaningful conversation what God might be calling us to.  This happens in worship, prayer, Bible study, retreat, mutual support and countless other big and small ways.

Group Spiritual Direction

One way we tend to God in our lives is through Group Spiritual Direction (GSD).  In GSD, a group of 3-4 people and a facilitator commit to gather together once a month for a year for prayer and discernment.· Together, they share and discern how God is at work in their lives, or what God may be calling them to do or be.

In GSD, silence is the key ingredient.· We leave ample time for silence as we begin our time to be aware of God’s presence with us.· We take time for silence between sharing and responding, so that we speak out of a sense of prayerfulness rather than our usual way of responding - trying to fix the other person or give advice.

We began GSD at Redeemer in March 2009 and we currently have three groups, each of which is comprised of both Redeemer members and people from other traditions, including Catholic, Unitarian, and Episcopal.
