Learning For Life
Sunday School (Pre-K to 5th Grade)
Our Sunday School serves children in Pre-K through 5th grade. Classes begin immediately after worship at 10:45am. We use the curriculum, Seasons of the Spirit, a biblically based, inclusive, current, and interactive curriculum. Every lesson for every age is based on readings from the same readings we hear in worship.
Confirmation (6th to 9th Grade)
Young adults baptized at an early age are claim the promises made on their behalf by their parents and godparents. Confirmation classes prepare these youths to make a public affirmation of these promises. Youths who are in 6th through 9th grade are enrolled in the Confirmation program at Redeemer. Instruction is rooted in Luther’s Small Catechism, which explains the Ten Commandments, Apostles’ Creed, Lord’s Prayer, Baptism, and Communion. Confirmation is a time for building community, learning, and serving, and having fun. The Confirmation class meets in the Comfortable Space during the Sunday education hour, from 10:45 to 12:00 noon. The class is co-taught by Scott Littlejohn and Pastor Anderson.
Senior Forum (10th to 12th Grade)
Our older youth in grades 10 through 12 meet with Pastor Anderson and special guests twice a month on Sundays 12:00-1:30 for conversation and lunch. We are using the resource Way to Live: Christian Practices for Teens. You can visit their interactive website at www.waytolive.org.
Adult Forum is a time for education and discussion on a range of topics relating to living out our faith in the world. This year we have discussed topics ranging from Affluenza, to Human Sexuality, Christianity and Politics, and the Lutheran tradition. From time to time we also have guest speakers. The Adult Forum meets during the Education Hour, 10:45 to 12:00 in the Parlor.
We have programs designed for families throughout the year, including Rally Day activities, Advent Workshop, and two Saturday afternoon programs. In October, we had Church House Rock, a take off on the classic School House Rock. On April 9 at 4:00, we will host a program called Good Soil Garden Center. Each program activites, music, skits, and learning centers, followed by supper.
Nursery Care is available from 9:15 to 12:00 on Sunday mornings. Once a month we have a special Story Time for nursery and pre-school aged children, which is led by one of our Sunday School teachers, who is also children's librarian.
Caring for Others
Whenever any of our families have a new baby, our members prepare and deliver meals to that family. We also bring meals to families when a family member is very ill.
This small group assists Pastor Anderson with visiting homebound members on a monthly basis. We also gather for reflection, support, and to build care giving skills.
Serving Our Neighbors
Redeemer is committed to doing its part to making hunger history. Along with several other New England Lutheran Churches, Redeemer helped to underwrite the production of a CD called Enough, whose sales have surpassed $70,000 - all of which goes to World Hunger Relief. You can find out more about this project at www.takeabreath.org.
Redeemer prepares and serves dinner at the Dwelling Place, located at the United Methodist Church in Woburn, on the second Monday of each month.
Founded in 1988, the Redeemer Foundation was created to donate money in the form of grants, scholarships, or gifts for special projects, missions, and general relief efforts both international and local.
Redeemer supports the work of the Woburn Council of Social Concern Food Pantry through food collection and volunteer assistance.
Growing In Faith
Redeemer offers two different Bible studies. A weekly Bible study is held at the home of Erik and Lois Erickson each Monday night. We also have a "Brownbaggers" Bible study that meets periodically during the year on Thursdays at noon. Please call the church or check the calendar for more information.
This year, under the leadership of our Care Committee, we have been raising our awareness and understanding of African religion and culture. We have read and discussed Dark Star Safari by Paul Theroux, Things Fall Apart by Chinua Achebe. This spring we will discuss The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsolver, and The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency by Alexander McCall Smith.
On Thursday evenings in Lent, we have a devotional or spirituality group. This year we are reading and reflecting on Martin Smith's A Season for the Spirit. Last Lent, we read Joyce Rupp's The Cup of our Life.
Youth at Redeemer are an active and integral part of our church community. Some of our youth even serve on church committees and ministry teams. A slate of youth group activities is in the works for the coming program year. Stay tuned!
Small Groups
Redeemer is growing and it has a growing number of members in their 20's and 30's. Our emerging 20 and 30-Somethings group gets together at one another's homes for food, conversation, games, and just to hang out.
One of the things Redeemer is known for is its music. Under the direction of Peggy Butt and accompanied by organist Paul Carlson, Redeemer's choir makes wonderful, worshipful, inspiring music each Sunday, September through June. The Choir rehearses Thursday evenings at 7:30pm. Redeemer's Bell Choir is four years old. Under the direction of Eva DiLascio, "the bells" perform at least once a month in worship. The Bell Choir rehearses Wednesday evenings at 7:30pm.
Free for Lunch? is a periodic lunch gathering designed to give people an opportunity to fellowship during the week. The only requirement is that you are free for lunch. So, whether you are retired, a stay-at-home parent, or can take off an hour from work for lunch, you are welcome. The next lunch is scheduled for March17, 2005 (St. Patrick's Day) at noon.
The Redeemer Women meet the first Monday of each month at 12:00 noon for food and fellowship.
